Huangpu Ancient Port is located in Shiji Village, Haizhu District, adjacent to the thousand-year-old Huangpu Village. Only 5 kilometers away from Zhujiang New Town, it stands as an important witness to the prosperity of Guangzhou’s Maritime Silk Road. The village preserves a large number of ancient ancestral halls, historical sites and cultural relics. Many people confuse Huangpu Ancient Port with Huangpu Military Academy, but they are in fact two separate places. The names of Huangpu Military Academy, Huangpu Port and Huangpu Avenue all originated from Huangpu Ancient Port. After the Qing Dynasty implemented the single-port trading policy in 1757, Guangzhou became the sole foreign trading port, and Huangpu Ancient Port was the only place where foreign ships could dock and clear customs. Between 1757 and 1842, merchant ships from various countries gathered here, making Huangpu Village a prosperous and bustling commercial hub. After the Opium War, more trading ports opened, the harbor channel silted up, and the port was relocated, leading to the gradual decline of the ancient port. Huangpu Ancient Village has produced many prominent figures: Hu Xuanze, the first Chinese consul stationed abroad; Liang Jingguo, a pioneer of the Thirteen Hongs; and Liang Cheng, known as the "Father of Tsinghua University". The Hu’s and Liang’s ancestral halls feature distinctive architecture with high historical and tourism value. Guangzhou Maritime University, a long-established navigation institution, is also located in the village. The ancient village retains a simple and classic style with a strong Lingnan water-town atmosphere. Many renovated ancient ancestral halls now serve as art studios, intangible cultural heritage exhibition halls and cultural display spaces, blending ancient and modern cultures. InterCulture Space inside the village is right next to Hu's Ancestral Hall, where minimalist modern design complements the ancient architecture. The space includes a shared workspace, exhibition hall, and thinker residency studio, along with a century-old ancient well. It regularly hosts scholars-in-residence, contemporary art exhibitions, cross-border salons and cultural exchange activities, making it a unique cultural and artistic venue in the ancient village.
